NEWSDate: Jul 09, 2011 Sydnor, Bowman win weekly awards
Nick Sydnor (Concord (W.Va.) University) of the Southern Maryland Nationals has been named the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Week for the week of June 27 to July 3. Sydnor accomplished the rare feat of scoring as many runs as he had hits in the week, a fact made even more impressive because that number was 13! The 13 hits included four doubles, a triple, and a home run. Sydnor also walked four times and stole five bases without being caught. He hit and scored at least one run in seven of the Nationals’ eight games last week, going 13-for-28 (.464). Sydnor is currently in the midst of a season-high nine-game hitting streak. Also considered: Adam Barry (Bethesda Big Train/Cal State Northridge), Tyler Anderson (Rockville Express/Florida Gulf Coast), Angel Ibanez (Rockville Express/Texas-Pan American), Sean Godfrey (Southern Maryland Nationals/Ball State), and Mike Mandarino (Southern Maryland Nationals/Cumberland (Md.)). Matt Bowman (Princeton) of the Bethesda Big Train has been named the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 27 to July 3. Bowman went 1-0 in two impressive starts during the week. He pitched seven innings in both games and has pitched at least seven innings in all five of his starts this season. Bowman defeated the Vienna River Dogs on June 28, allowing a pair of runs on just three hits and two walks while striking out four. He was even stronger against the Rockville Express on July 3, pitching seven shutout innings while scattering six hits and walk. He struck out six batters in Bethesda’s 2-1 win, but was no-decisioned in that game. The two starts lowered Bowman’s ERA to 0.75 this season. He is now 3-1 with 32 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched. Bowman will represent the Cal Ripken League in its All-Star Game vs. the Valley Baseball League on Monday, July 11. Also considered: Michael Graham (Herndon Braves/Virginia Commonwealth), Kyle Zara (Rockville Express/Nicholls State), Houston Hibberd (Rockville Express/San Francisco), John-Austin Shepard (Southern Maryland Nationals/Tusculum) and Kelly Secrest (Bethesda Big Train/UNC Wilmington).
